Sekinchan, Kuala Selangor

1-Day Trip to Sekinchan, Kuala Selangor

An impromptu road trip with the family on a Public Holiday brought us to a small town named Sekinchan. Sekinchan? Now I'm pretty sure that not many of you are aware of this small town located in Kuala Selangor - roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes drive from Kuala Lumpur.

Sekinchan was actually one of those trips that turned out to be surprisingly fun and informative, one of those trips that ends up better than expected. Despite being a pretty small and remote town with limited amenities, Sekinchan had so much to offer and see. Since the town is relatively small in size, all its attractions are just minutes away from one another.

In fact, a day trip to this quaint town is more than enough to cover all its main hot spots. However, if you feel like slowing down your pace and really get a feel of the town without being in a rush, there are plenty of places to stay overnight in Sekinchan.

Here's a list of interesting things you can do during your trip to Sekinchan:

1. Visit the Paddy Field

Image 1: Sekinchan Paddy Field

A small town located in the Malaysian state of Selangor, Sekinchan is known widely as the main producers of rice in Malaysia. Tourists come here specifically for its endless spread of Paddy Field across the small town.

Now, during my visit to Sekinchan it wasn't exactly the best time to visit as the harvesting season just ended. Nonetheless, the field looked just as amazing. The best time to visit Sekinchan for its Paddy Field  however is in:

March/April until mid May or September/October until mid November for a lush green field

OR

End of May or November for a golden paddy field

2. Get your coffee fix at No. 16 Bus Cafe

A relatively newer attraction in Sekinchan, No. 16 Bus Cafe is a cafe located inside a vintage bus that is mounted on a container - making it visible from miles away as it stands high amongst the paddy fields surrounding it. Sadly, since it was a public holiday, the cafe was closed and more so finding out that they actually close on Tuesdays - what a bummer.

However, after going through a bunch of reviews, No. 16 Bus Cafe is a must try - maybe not particularly for its food but just for the sake of the retro-like ambience. Perhaps one to try just for the experience!

Address: Kampung Parit Empat, 45400 Sekinchan, Selangor
Opening Hours: 11:00am-8:00pm (Friday-Monday) / 12:00pm-8:00pm (Thursday) / Closed on Tuesday & Wednesday

3. Learn about Paddy Processing @ Paddy Processing Factory & Gallery Sekinchan

Image 3: Paddy Processing Factory & Gallery, Sekinchan

Paddy Processing Factory & Gallery Sekinchan is the perfect place for you to get to know more about the Malaysian staple food and how its processed. For those who have lived in the city their whole lives - myself included, its a great way to acknowledge the hard work and thought process put into Paddy Processing, not to mention how much it has contributed to our overall Agricultural Industry.

At a very cheap entry fee of RM5 (Plus you get a free mini 250g packet of rice upon entry), visitors are exposed to the various rice processing processes. The short tour starts of with a video showing a summary of rice processing done at Sekinchan. After that, visitors are given a tour around the factory along with a brief explanation given by the guide.

Paddy Processing consists of 10 important steps:

 1  - Seeds
 2  - Seed Soaking
 3  - Seed Planting
 4  - Rice Nursery Raising
 5  - Land Preperation
6  - Spreading of Rice Strips/Rolled onto the Field
 7  - Weeding
 8  - Fertilisation
 9  - Land Flooding
10 - Harvesting

4. Travel back into time @ Ah Ma House

Ah Ma House aka Grandma House in Hokien is a village-type house designed to take us back into time, back to the days when life was simple and when the little things mattered. The overall interior resembled the look of how a 1950s -1960s house would look like - basically during the time my parents were just kids. Hence, they related a lot to growing up in a household similar to the one portrayed at Ah Ma House.

It's old wooden clocks, vintage television set and gramophone gives you a whole new vibe that is both intriguing yet somewhat calming. There's even a cosy corner for visitors to sit and relax while snacking on some sweets or cooling down with the famous "Ais Krim 0.20 sen" (according to my mum, back in her time it was "Ais Krim 0.2 sen"). Today, the iconic Malaysian ice cream is priced at RM2.00!

Ah Ma House is the best place for you to get some of you childhood snacks and tidbits such as red plum diskettes and plum tablets. They even have a candy floss machine which sells cotton candy of all types of flavours! Besides that, you can also get a bunch of local made products such as dried shrimps and rice cake crackers. Yum!

Now, you're probably wondering why go to an Ocean Gallery to sip on some panda coconut? Well, just because the hot weather in Sekinchan would leave you constantly dehydrated and what better way than to hydrate yourself with an all-natural cooling aid like a pandan coconut? Not only is the pandan coconut served here refreshing, its also priced at a very cheap price of RM4.50 (You would never be granted a price like this in KL).

However, in all seriousness, Sekinchan Ocean Gallery also happens to be actual 3D Art Gallery but it apparently closed down just recently leaving only a stall that sells homemade fish and potato crackers (with a friendly vendor) and a stall which sells pandan coconut. Sekinchan Ocean Gallery is located just across Ah Ma House, so if you could use a pandan coconut you know where to go!

If you're a fan of mangoes then you'd go crazy at Mango King, Sekinchan. The mangoes sold here are as big as your arm! No joke. People literally just come here to buy mangoes, mangoes and more MANGOES. Wan Chai Mango King sells their mangoes at RM8 per kilogram with their friendly staff who are always ready to help you pick out the best ones.

Besides that, Mango King also sells one of the best Mango Juices I've ever had in my entire life. The mangoes are freshly juiced up in the blender (and I'm not talking Boost Juice style where they add in ice cream or yoghurt for a more rich flavour). Yet, the mango juice is so thick and filling that it could even pass off as an entire meal! Don't forget to bring home some mangoes while you're at it.

Possibly the most lively place to be in Sekinchan, Redang Beach is a place for just about anyone of any age. Kids can enjoy Bubble Blowing and Kite Flying by the beach as the wind at Redang Beach is very strong. Adults can enjoy shell picking as the entire beach is flooded with shells of all shapes and sizes! (Disclaimer: It is highly recommended that you were shoes while strolling the along the beach)

Besides that, there are also a some tree houses located in front of the beach (though not well-maintained I must say) that you can go onto to maybe eat or drink while you enjoy the peaceful atmosphere at Redang Beach. There are also many stalls selling dried seafood, snacks, prawn crackers and even kites nearby. Redang Beach really does have it all.

8. Make a Wish @ Sekinchan Wishing Tree

Image 11: Sekinchan Wishing Tree

Driving into Redang Beach, you might start to wonder what is that huge tree on your left that's filled with a red cloth/strings all over its tree branches. Yes, that is indeed the famous Sekinchan Wishing Tree. And yes, it is believed that whatever you wish for is deemed to come true once its put onto this the branches of this tree.

Hundreds and thousands of red ribbons with its individual wishes has been thrown over the branches of this tree. Anyone can make a wish here. Just head on to the red wooden temple located beside it, get your red knot form the person in charge and write your wishes away.

Address: 25, Jalan Jpt, 45400 Sekinchan, Selangor

9. Visit the Fishing Village

Image 12: Sekinchan Fishing Village

Located just next to Redang Beach, Sekinchan's Fishing Village is a must to visit of you've always been intrigued by the Fisherman life or just fishing in general. Here, you would be able to witness first hand of the lives of fisherman - from their preparations to their fishing techniques and even how they mend their boats. A truly eye-opening experience, this one.

It's easy to get carried away with our busy lives that sometimes we forget how even a small role as a fisherman contributes to the overall betterment of the society. Without them, we wouldn't have all those fresh fishes we see and buy everyday at the markets!

Address: No. 358 Jalan Pantai Redang, Bagan Sekinchan, Kampung Sekinchan, Sekinchan, Selangor

10. Feast on some Fresh Seafood

Where there's a fishing village, there's definitely fresh seafood! Sekinchan is not only known to have the freshest seafood selection but also some of the cheapest too! Priced at almost a fraction of what they charge you in KL, Sekinchan's seafood is guaranteed to not burn a hole in your pocket. So, what more could you ask for?

You can get plenty of seafood across the entire town, not just nearby the fishing village to fulfil that seafood craving of yours! At Sekinchan, you would be spoilt with choices!
